Being ethical or not!?

November 25, 2009

In and out of our classrooms, whenever I do something or utter something, I always here the word  “UNETHICAL” or “Naka-Unethical naman”. In order to defend myself, I always say that being ethical or not depends on what people thinks. Being ethical or not depends on the person not by your own standards. It varies from different perspective or point of view. Well I guess, if it’s for fun and it doesn’t harm other people, it’s good. Some people may not get my point but I don’t want to walk with their shadows and follow what they think is right. I have my own mind and free will. They’re not the one who brought me out of this world, fed and clothed me. I know what is right and what is wrong.

Sometimes, I tend to keep quiet in order not to say harsh words. I don’t want to hurt anybody. But, sometimes there are things that you can’t keep by yourself and there are times you want to burst it out. Well they should consider what other people feel and be sensitive enough that sometimes it hurts to be called by your “tomadachi”, “Unethical”

1. Is every action that is legal also ethical?

Not all legal action are to be considered as ethical. Many of us do things that are based on existing laws (legally accepted) but in other factors it is not ethical. Laws that were created by those people (pertaining to politicians) are not perfect.

Can you describe an action that is legal but ethically wrong?

Euthanasia or mercy killing is a perfect example. For some countries like Northern Territory of Australia, where they made it legal (March 23, 1997) considered it as an act of mercy to those patients that are seriously ill and will soon end up to death. In their place, this action is legal but as a Christian and a God fearing person, I think its unethical. In the Bible it states that it is only God who can take away one’s life because we only borrow this life. Aside from that, it violates the rigth to live of that person.

Aside from euthanasia, divorce and annulment are also an example. Many countries around the world legalized this process. Their reason is that, when a person is not happy with his/her marriage life for some reasons, instead of spending your lifetime  suffering to your husband/wife better have a divorce or annulment of your marriage. I don’t consider this as an ethical act because in the first place why you choose him/her to be your partner in life if you don’t know well that person. As they say, “Ang pag-aasawa ay hindi parang kanin na ‘pag napaso ka ay pwede mong iluwa”.

Is every ethical action also legal? Is the law not ethics?

No, because there are also things that are accepted in a group of people but not basically accepted by other groups. There are different set of rules and laws around the world. Each of these countries have different peceptions about what they think is right and wrong.

2. Is it possible for an employee to be successful in the workplace without acting ethically?

For me it’s a big YES. Not all the successful man nowadays act ethically, some of them tried to attain their goals in life in an easy way. As they say, if you want to make things easier, do all what it takes as long as you can achieve your goals. It is really hard to attain a certain goal in an easy way. It has to be done with passion and hardwork. Since many of us nowadays are aiming to attain success, some people tolerates what they saw and apply them even if it is unethical. The word “SIPSIP” is a good example of this because they say that “Kung sino ang mas malapit sa kalan ay siya ang unang maliliyaban”.

Proper Etiquette

November 6, 2009

Learning about proper etiquette is important. One must understand the way he/she behave in order to become ethical or someone who abides in the law. As they say, there are many factors to consider whether a behaviour is ethical or not. For some people consider things as ethical while some thinks the other way around. For me its the matter on how you distinguish right from wrong. If you thought that what you are doing is right then its ethical and if its not then it will become the way around.
